KEYNOTE TITLE: Bringing Social to Security
KEYNOTE ABSTRACT:
Joe talked at HITB 2011 (Amsterdam) about the importance of security teams innovating constantly to keep up with the security landscape, and during his keynote this year at HITB KL, he will share some recent examples of innovative security initiatives that leverage social engagement to improve security.
These examples won’t just focus on user-facing product experiences on Facebook, but will extend to the company’s bug bounty program, employee education campaigns, red teams and incident response efforts. In each case Joe will show how transparency and engagement have helped get better results.
ABOUT JOE SULLIVAN
Joe Sullivan is the Chief Security Officer at Facebook, where he manages a small part of a company-wide effort to ensure a safe internet experience for Facebook users. He and the Facebook Security Team work internally to develop and promote high product security standards, partner externally to promote safe internet practices, and coordinate internal investigations with outside law enforcement agencies to help bring consequences to those responsible for spam, fraud and other abuse.
Prior to joining Facebook in 2008, Joe spent over 6 years working in a number of different security and legal roles at PayPal and eBay, including at different times, overseeing user safety policies and company relations with law enforcement agencies around the world, overseeing eBay’s regulatory compliance efforts, and managing PayPal’s North America legal team.
Before entering the private sector, Joe spent 8 years with the United States Department of Justice. He was the first federal prosecutor in a US Attorney’s office dedicated full-time to fighting high-tech crime, working on many high profile internet cases, ranging from the digital evidence aspects of the 9/11 investigation to child predator, computer intrusion, and economic espionage cases. He was a founding member of the Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Unit, a special unit based in Silicon Valley dedicated exclusively to high-tech crime prosecution. Joe has spoken extensively on internet crime investigations at law enforcement and industry conferences around the world, has testified before the U.S. Congress on online child exploitation detection and prevention initiatives, and has trained prosecutors and judges from many countries on electronic evidence and other cyber-related legal issues.
