HITB LAB: Advanced Chip Level Analysis

Today software based analysis is very common but hardware just growing up. It is very effective and efficient to dig out vulnerabilities from the chip level but hardware analysis always seems difficult and involves higher costs while using advanced equipment and skills like soldering, chip on/off or even in-circuit system programming.

During the workshop, I will introduce you to the newest and latest functions of a flasher box, the use of universal chip reader/adaptors to analyse over 90% BGA chips embedded on mobile and IoT devices, and you’ll also have the chance to practice your skills.

Workshop outline

  • Introduction of eMMC/eMCP/UFS2.0, the latest version of flasher box (Medasu Pro II), UFS2.0 2in1 chip reader and 13in1 chip adaptor.
  • How to extract and retrieve data from at least 3 common types of BGA chip, 153/169/221 and analyse the content
  • Hands-on practice the chip adaptor/reader

Students will learn

  • Understanding of 90% BGA in the market
  • Use of latest version of flasher box and chip readers
  • Pros & cons of different chip readers and flasher boxes in the market
